Apple Rolls Over

The release of the new iPhone wasn’t the only news coming out from Apple. Apple has unexpectedly dropped its lawsuit against NSO Group, the company behind the Pegasus spyware.

The lawsuit was initially filed to hold NSO accountable for exploiting vulnerabilities in Apple devices to install spyware. The sudden withdrawal of the case has raised questions, although the reasons remain unclear. Apple's decision may influence broader efforts to regulate spyware and cybersecurity threats.

Teen Takes TfL To Town

A few weeks ago I posted about a cyber security breach impacting London’s Transport for London (TfL).

Well, a UK teenager has been arrested for the cyberattack that reportedly disrupted services, resulting in the authorities launching an investigation which led to the teen's arrest.

Typically, young threat actors were only viewed as being capable of causing low impact incidents; threat actors often referred to as Script Kiddies. However, this incident goes to show that the greater availability of more sophisticated tools, techniques and know-how means the barrier to causing significant impact is much lower.

Jigsaw AI Jailbreak

Now this is scary. A hacker managed to bypass ChatGPT’s safety protocols, tricking it into providing detailed instructions for making homemade bombs!

The hacker referred to the attack as a “social engineering hack to completely break all the guardrails around ChatGPT’s output.” He was able to trick ChatGPT into producing the bomb-making instructions by telling the bot to “play a game,” and create a detailed science-fiction fantasy world where the AI’s safety guidelines would not apply.

This incident raises concerns about the potential misuse of AI tools like ChatGPT for harmful purposes, highlighting the need for stricter content safeguards and monitoring of AI outputs to prevent malicious exploitation.
